LIVING FOOD AT CAWDOR CASTLE
Saturday 25th September 2010
“Gabh is meal e” – “Eat and Enjoy”
LIVING FOOD AT CAWDOR CASTLE was launched in 2006, to meet the need in the Highlands for a food festival which celebrates exclusively artisan and organic producers. It responds to concerns from the public and small-scale producers that the industrialisation of farming, fishing and food production will eclipse the tradition of high quality food associated with the Highlands of Scotland.
The first Living Food at Cawdor Castle, in September 2006, had 35 stalls showcasing artisan and organic produce from within a radius of approximately fifty miles of the castle. A small committee was set up to select stallholders whose products have obvious connections to the traditional Highland larder. In subsequent years, the number of stallholders increased to nearly 50 but the criteria for selection were retained. The area from which producers were drawn included very close neighbours to the castle, in order to help local farmers, and was extended further east into Aberdeenshire and west into the islands.
Food is provided by the Slow Food taster plates which featured products from the stalls. A team of chefs from Highland and Grampian, led by Charles Lockley from Boath House, a champion of local producers, Scotland Chef of the Year 2009 and now the proud owner of a Michelin star, has supported the event with demonstrations each year. This year he will again be present with up and coming Highland chefs and all this will be enhanced by the presence of Albert Roux, who will open the event. Music, clearly associated with the Highlands, also features prominently throughout the day.
Living Food at Cawdor Castle is a highly successful and proven event which has, over the past four years, played a major part in promoting all that is good about high quality organic and local produce in the Highlands and Islands. It has given our top producers a unique regional and international platform to educate the public on where to source good food, to let them taste good food and to allow them to greater understand the benefits to their health and to the environment of such food production. This makes it the ideal event for the year of Scotland ‘Land of Food and Drink’ and a perfect opportunity to enhance joint working between the food and drink industry and the events industry.
